If you are a student, a homemaker, retired, or just do not wish to deal with a standard lifestyle, you now have much more options than ever to be, in a very real sense, your very own boss!

A rack is to a bottle what candlelight is to the dinner: one might as well dine in the jungle naked, then, over poor roots and berries in the dark and damp!

So the more people you recruit, and the more they recruit, the more money you make!

The world wide web makes these kinds of systems much easier to create and manage, what with automation and a slew of options. The worldwide web by itself is a network (it is, after all, a web!) and so perfectly suits network marketing, exponentially – yes, that word again – increasing its scope and depth – yes, scope and depth.

“Scope” refers to range while “depth” relates to quality. Not only does the internet increase your range by leaps and bounds, the nature of the medium is such that quality contacts are much easier to make and maintain. Not like in pre-internet days when network marketers had to depend on relatively hit-or-miss media such as print or radio, the world wide web allows for seriously precise targeting of your audience, your market. Web metrics can tell you how many impressions are served up, what number of click-throughs occurred, and of course what your conversion rates are – just for starters!

It’s fascinating to watch old science fiction movies and compare the technology onscreen with current state-of-the-art technology in real life. For example, isn’t it funny that the world of interplanetary travel depicted in Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” should not have thought of smartphones and invented them – though in fact, such devices were in reality just another five or so years away from commercial feasibility! And it’s funny how with all the cinematic attention focused on such grand ambitious technologies like extraterrestrial travel the wonders that really did take place, in the real world, should carry, arguably, a lot more weight, impacting as they do our lives in perhaps much more important ways. Take, for instance, the sort of rides operated by serial entrepreneur Zalman Silber.

Zalman Silber is the founder of a number of tourist attractions in the United States and Australia. Some are really great, such as Skywalk and The Edge, while others are rather uninspired, such as the Skyride and Oztrek. These latter two are billed as an immersive you-are-there experience for the whole family – blah blah blah – but they’re hardly more than travel flicks the kind you can find on public TV, educational fare you’ve seen a million times over already in school, even. They are helicopter fly-bys of New York and Sydney, respectively, with the only concession to “multimedia” (a buzzword that’s been commonly used to ballyhoo them) being so-called motion seating providing kinetic feedback in sync with actions onscreen.

Nothing, as mentioned already, anyone hasn’t seen before.

Yet such things were to be found in many a science fiction film (albeit B-grade knock-offs, admittedly), someone’s vision of what hi-tech audio-visuals would be like one day! Naturally, that just speaks to the poverty of the imagination on the part of the writers more than anything else, but the point is that such contemplation makes for much amusement when screening the science fiction films of yesteryear.

Or take one of the earliest scenes from “Logan’s Run,” when the title character uses a kind of television-teleporter to find a date. Instead of going to a bar, the people of that world use this device to summon dates! It’s nothing short of a kind of 3-D Craig’s List!

These “everyday details” have a tendency to show up in the more thoughtful and interesting movies, and on the whole make up one useful yardstick by which much of the best examples may be separated from the mundane. For most sci-fi flicks focus on laser guns and starships, but leave out what really makes science fiction interesting in the first place, the nexus between science and technology and the everyday lives of human beings.

See how the worldwide web has changed everything? And what is it but a network of computers connecting to one another, serving up information, ordinarily in a graphical (and truly multimedia) way? Nothing especially complicated here; no “warp drive” or “plasma cannon” here – proving the old adage that life is stranger than fiction!

When it comes to educational toys, parents today face a cornucopia of options that might sometimes threaten to break the bank! For no business has ever gone under selling things to parents that are touted as being beneficial to their kids. And given the modern-day social phenomenon of the helicopter parent, ever-doting and ever-present, the makers of educational toys know that anything marketed as somehow providing kids with an advantage, often intellectual, is as sure a money-maker as anything ever tried.

Obviously, not each and every single product is going to be a best-seller. However the chances of success improve when it comes to those purportedly designed to teach or help kids learn. But if you think about it, educational toys have always been around. After all, what are jigsaw puzzles?

And so we come upon one of the greatest controversies in child psychology. Just what makes a toy educational? Aren’t toys, by definition, educational to start with? To be sure, the more complex a toy the greater the likelihood that it’s educational – that it teaches, or could be learned from.

But because play is an inherent part of human nature, and any object manipulated in a spirit of entertainment can be a toy, does it not follow that just about anything may be turned into a toy – and an educational one at that?

Sure. But there do exist toys which are obviously significantly more educational than others. Lego-type building blocks clearly involve motor and cognitive skills. But something like a programmable robot kit is clearly significantly more “educational” in comparison. Of course, it all would depend on the age of the child.

And so, in a strange way, it all comes down to the little one anyway – toys undoubtedly help, but never mistake education with learning itself, a fallacy all too easily seen in individuals who are primarily focused on factors outside the self.

Modern scholars classify Greek vases by shape, though there are about a hundred various categories that result. As can be imagined, most distinguishing features are really subtle and require not only a trained eye but an understanding of art theory. Several others, however, may be readily identified by the layman with only a little bit of self-education.

Among such Greek vases easily recognized by non-scholars are the amphora and the stamnos, both of which are used to store as well as transport food and wine. For cooling or mixing wines, however, ancient Greeks mostly used kraters or psykters. When it comes to really drinking wine, however, a kantharos, kylix, or oinochoe was used.

Drawing water was another issue, and so naturally necessitated an entire category of Greek vases, which contains the hydria, loutrophoros, and lebes gamikos. Interestingly, the lebes gamikos was composed of three pieces; a bowl with handles, a covering lid, and a stand to support them all – no surprise the name means, literally, “marriage bowl!” Actually, it was indeed employed as a part of wedding rituals, to bring water for the bridal bath. Therefore vases of this sort were decorated with wedding scenes, usually involving preparations or the processions themselves.

As may be imagined, a culture that invented vases just for carrying water on a particular occasion is sure to use vases for such things as cosmetics, too! And so it’s that the pyxis and lekythos were used to hold oils and perfumes. They are not to be confused with those employed for athletics, also containing oils, such as the aryballos and alabastron.

Do you think its strange that the ancient Greeks should employ so many categories of vases when any one should do? Well, simply take a look at our own times, when people have so many different bags for just as many different occasions!

During the early eighties, computers were billed as something like educational toys. A number of kids desired them, but only a handful of parents fully understood the point. The world, see, hadn’t yet gone through the personal computing revolution then.

Computer systems had not taken over businesses, becoming an essential tool of everyday business; there were still whole sectors of professional typists who did practically nothing all day but create paperwork for other departments. Had a bill? Someone typed it up. Need to send a letter? Someone typed it up.

And so getting a computer in those days was like getting educational toys for Christmas – or so many unsuspecting parents thought. They may have read something about the coming computer revolution and vaguely understood that such electronics are going to be somehow essential to the world in a few years, however it’s doubtful the typical buyer thought much about it. No, it was the kids who clammored – and how educational could the thing be if kids were willingly, even passionately, asking for it?

Begging, demanding – rarely the behavior of children in relation to many educational toys! And certainly, for many kids, the computer became nothing more than a glorified videogaming machine, a home arcade.

To be sure, a much wider range of entertainment software was available for computer platforms than on the game consoles of the era, a variation which persists, though less sharply, today. But make no error in judgment: the final use the majority of kids got out of a home computer system at the time was electronic entertainment.

Luckily for a few, however, having a pc within the home – it was generally shared between siblings – lead to professions in information technology. For these individuals, the early fascination with computers has endured, maturing into jobs creating software, installing hardware, supervising networks. For their parents, a computer was truly the investment in their children initially envisioned.

Sure it can be fun to dream, but the vast majority of us will never have the opportunity to find out for sure. You can still buy our Italian marble statues, of course, but they just wouldn’t be the same without acres and acres of land to go with them! So just what is it that makes multi-millionaires and billionaires out of some while most others live fairly normal lives?

It is an old question, and even in such a age of scientific marvels nobody knows for sure. Many of the self-made feel, whether publicly or only privately, that they themselves are practically entirely responsible for their own good fortune. However notice that the very word itself, “fortune,” underlines the lucky, entirely coincidental nature of wealth.

While one still has to work, and usually very hard, to earn such vast fortunes, there are a great many who work just as hard and get no such rewards. But because there is really nothing to be said about luck, which is often amenable to improvement through conscious actions, the conversation can only involve those matters which can be directly affected, producing in the long run the false impression that everything or just about everything is due to skill, intelligence, and perseverance.

The largest part of the issue is semantic. Exactly what do we mean by luck? Just what do we mean by success? Ultimately, it has to do with free will. What is free will? What is the self? Against such perennial philosophical puzzles, obtaining your fancy estate and all the marble sculptures to go with it should be a walk in the park (or across your own estate!) by comparison.

House arrest is really a common kind of incarceration for political dissidents the world over. Unfortunately, it’s only used on a few high-profile people, most likely as a nod to world opinion and foreign political pressure; most such people are basically taken away and sometimes not heard from again.

A very humane form of punishment, house arrest has gotten a bad reputation due to its common use by authoritarian governments all across the world. However, optimists will note that such considerable adoption bodes well for democracy and human rights in the long run.

After all, it could have been much easier for the tyrants to basically murder their opponents outright, as was practically always the case in the past and as is still far too often the case even now. But the prevailing Zeitgeist is such that a nod towards some kind of decorum has become rather expected behavior, even of tyrants.

In the democracies, house arrest is only used in cases of relatively petty crimes and/or where the convicted has outstanding health issues that may make prison a likely death sentence. Unlike in authoritarian countries, home incarceration in a democracy is enforced by technological means, employing sophisticated electronic measures to ensure compliance as opposed to armed guards posted around the clock preventing access and egress.

First tried as far back as the turn of the twentieth century, it’s only in the late seventies and early eighties that home incarceration truly came into form with the development of reliable monitoring devices. Usually, the subject has to wear a bracelet or anklet that contains sensors which provide information on his or her whereabouts, enabling tracking by the authorities.

A less intrusive form involves automatic calling services which will call up the subject at random times, with computers matching the subject’s voice against a database of recognized patterns. Authorities are alerted in instances where the call is not answered or if the voice doesn’t appear to match.

The NEMO Equipment tent is the flagship product category of NEMO Equipment, an outdoors business specializing in high-level design and engineering. And so, with its credibility thus established, the company branched out beyond the original NEMO Equipment tent to study other designs for an increasingly diverse market of outdoorsmen and women.

The spirit of extreme sports had by then taken hold of campers, hikers, climbers, and trekkers alike, and so the AST range of products designed for extreme conditions was unveiled. Industry accolades poured in right alongside increased sales, and no less than U.S. Navy Seals have endorsed NEMO products for real-world use that’s reliable like no other.

Most recently, NEMO Equipment has been studying greener products, work that has resulted in the first-ever nearly hundred percent recycled tent, with poles made of bamboo. Product lines have expanded to offer tent accessories and even fan gear, in response to the company’s dedicated following!

In fact, the company is staffed with people whose pastimes often incorporate company products. Being avid outdoorsmen and women themselves has surely lent the business invaluable marketing insight.

Gun safes are necessary and often required by law. They prevent access to firearms and ammunition. Hardlier models will prevent damage as well, such as in the case of fire or flood. Some kinds of safes use hi-tech electronic locks whilst excellent old-fashioned mechanical ones are found on most. Interestingly, it is this latter type of lock that is reputed to possess the highest reliability.

The gun safes of yesteryear had been crafted with good looks in mind more than anything else, but their primary duty nowadays is as described above. As a part of modern-day security concerns, many are designed to really blend in with their environment and be as inconspicuous as possible, an ironic complete about-face for a class of furniture that was once meant to be shown off.

Old-fashioned designs are still available, of course, though usually with added security features in a nod to the times. As mentioned previously, firearms safety is really a legal matter now, and many gun racks and safes are even bolted down to prevent tipping over, especially when empty (since the heaviest component is usually the door).

Gun ownership is highly politicized and controversial within the United States, and one of the greatest ways for American enthusiasts to vouchsafe their remaining rights is to demonstrate common sense for safety and security, which well-made safes and racks help them do.

It might rankle, but because of increasing support for gun control in this country, owners are automatically enlisted in a public relations campaign of sorts. Image is key since facts and figures are “all over the place” and might be utilized to buttress either position.

For example, whilst the FBI reported that ten thousand murders have been committed by firearms throughout 2005, a New England Journal of Medicine article in 1992 seemed to suggest that guns also deter or stop crime millions of times a year as well.

The most effective in educational toys throughout the 1980s was surely the personal computer. Likely unknown to the majority of parents at the time, personal computers were poised to thoroughly take over the world in another ten years, and having one in the house could give one’s child a headstart on the brave new world of tomorrow.

Actually, it has so transpired that many of today’s jobs in information technology are indeed staffed by people whose early fascination with personal computers has now lead to careers creating software, installing hardware, or managing networks.

Unfortunately in the case of many others, however, such educational toys became nothing more than a home arcade. Of course, the scope of genres offered encompassed more than just simple shoot-’em-ups, and entertainment by itself was but one category among others like productivity (accounting software like VisiCalc) and art (greeting card makers like The Print Shop), nevertheless for the many kids who owned a computer during the eighties, it was all about games, games, games.

What a lost opportunity, if there ever was one! It was a great tragedy, too, for the parents who in all earnesty thought that they were buying educational toys, for personal computers were not cheap back then!

Even the popular Commodore 64, with a floppy disk drive, monitor, and printer, ran about nine hundred dollars – during a period when pizza was less than a dollar a slice and most comic books no more than seventy-five cents!

That is more than fifteen hundred dollars in today’s money, adjusting for inflation; that’s a lot for a CPU, monitor, and printer. That’s a lot for a glorified gaming console. The computer is one of fascinating case of an “educational toy” ever in history. It truly is the only educational toy that is truly both, and yet could very easily be used exclusively as just one or the other.

Wine for medicinal purposes? It used to be a hilarious excuse of alcoholics, however scientific research seems to confirm the practice – in moderation. Drinking a single five-ounce serving of red wine a day seems to duplicate the beneficial aspects of caloric restriction without any of the potential side effects such as muscle loss and decrease in bone density.

Very little has been effectively proven yet – because long-term studies require, well, a long period of time to finish – but all indications thus far have been positive. Unlike the case of smoking, which doctors in the 1920s really recommended for good health (!), the everyday drinking of red wine in moderation really does appear to provide health benefits.

Take note that we’re talking about red wines in particular, not regular, and not barley wines or other kinds of fruit wines. Nor do we necessarily mean other kinds of alcohol, regardless of whether made from grains or vegetables – only red wines.

The main reason for this is that resveratrol, the main chemical offering all these benefits (there are others, of course; a little on them later), comes from grape skin and is discovered most abundantly in red wines. Specifically, resveratrol is produced by grape skin when infected by fungus, such as that which occurs during fermentation through the exposure to yeast.

White wines, in contrast, are made with minimal contact of that sort during their production process and for this reason are not the best source of resveratrols; needless to say, all other kinds of alcohol contain no grapes at all, though all alcohol, in moderate, minute amounts, are now presumed to provide some benefits to the heart.

So grab a small glass of “red, red wine” and kick back to the UB40 song of the same name and sip little by little, enjoying your daily dose of resveratrol, polyphenols, antioxidants, and flavonoids!

I love going to the gym. Every thing about it turns me on. Just the st-r-r-eeetch of athletic tape gets me going. I can see it now, even in my mind’s eye, the taut white tape as well as the specks of dust undoing it from its roll sends up into the air.

Weird? You bet. That, and chalk. Athletic tape and chalk. I dust my palms in it for kettlebells and Olympic weightlifting. Downright needed. You want a proper grip, but in addition, you want ease of movement for those split-second snatches and catches. Chalk lets you do that.

Athletic tape supports the wrists while in those high-speed, high-torque maneuvers. Tricks of the trade. Some folks use tape for their knees and even ankles, too, but luckily I don’t need to. But it really is comforting to feel support for my wrists, which is probably my personal weakest link.

Outsiders, non-weightlifters, may well ponder why, why not just do some thing else, like machines, if using free-weights are so dangerous as to need such accessories as chalk and tape. It really is a valid question, at first glance. But these things aren’t actually necessities, which is why they’re referred to as “accessories” in the first place.

It’s just that many serious, competitive lifters use them because, well, we’re a superstitious bunch, and any bit of luck will do. More talisman than anything else, tape and chalk are comforting, psychologically comforting, and thus empowering. For at elite levels of competition, the distinguishing mark is the mental edge.

Besides, it does stand to reason how tape and chalk assist; one supports joints while the other supports grip, respectively. Aside from strength, your joints and your grip are the other crucial factors that determine success in lifting. With a powerful grip and solid joints, all you should worry about is proper form and of course the sheer strength to lift. Having a sturdy grip and strong dependable joints means you are already halfway there!
